He was a very busy writer. He wrote about 145,000 lines of poetry. That is a huge amount of writing! He wrote many kinds of stories. Some were fables, which are stories that teach lessons. Others were romances or poems about holy people.

Lydgate wrote some very long books. His work called the Troy Book tells the history of Troy. He also wrote the Fall of Princes. This was his last and longest work. He even wrote about the legends of St. Edmund and St. Alban. These were holy men from his local area.

Lydgate studied at Oxford University. He lived in a monastery called Bury St Edmunds Abbey. He had many important people help him with his work. These people were called patrons. They included kings like Henry V. Lydgate was a friend to the son of the poet Geoffrey Chaucer. In his own poems, Lydgate admitted he was not always a perfect child. He said he once stole apples and lied to get out of trouble.
