Writing is a big part of his life, but he has many interests. Irving was a student athlete who participated in wrestling at Phillips Exeter Academy. Wrestling is a sport where people grapple with each other. He loved this sport so much that he coached his sons' high school teams. He was even put into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1992. He also studied writing at the University of Iowa. There, he studied under a writer named Kurt Vonnegut. These different experiences helped him become a great storyteller.

Irving's life story has shaped the things he writes about. He was born John Wallace Blunt Jr. in Exeter, New Hampshire, in 1942. He grew up with his mother and his stepfather, Colin Franklin Newell Irving. Irving has dyslexia, which can make reading and writing a hard job. He also wrote about his biological father in his books. His father was a pilot in the Army Air Forces during World War II. In 1943, his father was shot down over Burma but survived. Irving did not learn about his father's bravery until he was nearly 40 years old.

His books often feel like big, epic tales. They frequently take place in small towns that look like New England. For example, many of his stories are set in places like Exeter, New Hampshire. Some of his novels, like A Prayer for Owen Meany, are very long and detailed. He often uses a style called first-person narrative. This is when the storyteller tells the story as "I." This helps readers feel closer to the characters. His books have reached number one on The New York Times bestseller list many times.

Many of Irving's stories have moved from the page to the movie screen. Five of his novels have been made into films. These include The World According to Garp and Simon Birch. He even made a small appearance in one of his movie adaptations. In the film version of Garp, he acted as a referee in a wrestling match. He also wrote a book called My Movie Business about making a movie. This shows how much he cares about the way stories are shared. He continues to write new books for readers all over the world.
