He spent his life studying how people made beautiful pottery long ago. Beazley was a classical archaeologist and an art historian. This means he studied the history and the art of ancient Greece. He became a world authority on decorated Greek pottery. He focused on two main styles called black-figure and red-figure. These styles used different colors to show pictures on vases. He wanted to understand the stories behind these old objects. His work helped us see the skill of ancient artists.

Beazley had a very clever way of studying art.

He looked at the tiny details of how lines were drawn. He used a method to find the "hands" of specific artists. This means he could tell who painted a vase by its style. Even if a vase had no name on it, he could identify the maker. For example, he first discovered the work of the Berlin Painter. He looked at many pieces to build a history of workshops. This helped him map out how art changed in ancient Athens.

Beazley was born in Glasgow, Scotland, on September 13, 1885.

He even wrote a funny story about Herodotus visiting a zoo. He was a very talented student in his youth. He also loved writing poetry before he became a full-time scholar. His friend James Flecker even wrote a poem to him about it.

His career at Oxford was very long and important.

They even kept a pet goose at Christ Church together.
