Many people call him the father of art history. He was a pioneer in archaeology, which is the study of the past through objects. Winckelmann changed how we look at old art. He used a systematic way to group art into different styles. He was the first to show the clear differences between Greek and Roman art. His ideas helped start the Neoclassical movement in the late 1700s.

This movement encouraged artists to use the styles of ancient Greece.

Winckelmann used careful observation to study ancient works. He looked at statues and paintings very closely. He could tell when a Roman piece was actually a copy of Greek art. This was a new way of thinking at the time. He believed that people could become great by imitating the ancients. To him, imitation did not mean simple copying. It meant using reason to make something new and special.

He used this idea to describe a style of "noble simplicity and quiet grandeur."

Winckelmann was born in 1717 in Stendal, Germany.

His early life was very difficult because his family was poor. His father was a cobbler and his mother was a weaver's daughter. He studied at several schools, including the University of Halle in 1738. He originally studied theology, but he loved Greek classics much more. He even worked as a teacher and a tutor to make money. Later, he became a secretary for a large library in Nöthnitz. This library had about 40,000 books for him to read.

In 1755, Winckelmann moved to Rome to continue his studies.

He arrived in Rome in November of that year. He spent time describing famous statues like the Apollo Belvedere. He worked as a librarian for several important leaders, including Cardinal Passionei. He also worked for Cardinal Albani in his large collection of old art. In 1763, he became the Prefect of Antiquities for Pope Clement XIII. He even visited the excavations at Pompeii and Herculaneum to see new finds.
