She was a very famous athlete. People gave her many names. They called her the Blonde Bomber. They also called her the Roller Derby Queen. Joan joined the sport in 1954. She was a member of the Los Angeles Braves. Later, she became the captain of the San Francisco Bay Bombers. She was a great skater. She was on all-star teams for 19 years. In fact, she was the highest-paid female athlete in the 1960s and 1970s.

Joan loved many kinds of sports. She played softball in college. She also enjoyed surfing and canoeing. In 1962, she won a big canoe race in Hawaii. On the track, Joan was a kind mentor. She helped new skaters learn the sport.

Joan died in 1997. Even though she was a star, she was not in the first Hall of Fame. This was because the original sport stopped in 1973. A new Hall of Fame in New York fixed this later. They added her to their Hall of Fame in 2004.
