Gwen Verdon was a famous American actress and dancer. She was a star on Broadway for many years.

As a child, Gwen had weak legs. She had to wear hard boots and leg braces. Her mother put her in dance classes to help. These classes made her legs strong. By age six, she was already dancing on stage. She learned many styles like tap, jazz, and ballet. She even learned how to juggle!

Gwen became very successful in musical shows. She won four Tony Awards for her acting. One big hit was a show called Damn Yankees. She also starred in shows like Sweet Charity and Chicago.

Gwen married a director named Bob Fosse. They worked together on many films and plays. She also helped other stars learn how to dance. Later in life, Gwen helped people with mental health. She believed that counseling could help people feel better. She also loved cats and often had six at home.

When Gwen died in 2000, people honored her. They dimmed the lights on Broadway to show respect.
