People loved watching her skate on the track. She had many special nicknames. Some called her the "Blonde Bomber" or the "Blonde Amazon." Others called her the "Golden Girl" or the "Roller Derby Queen." She was the most famous person in the original Roller Derby. Many fans saw her as the hero of the sport. She was a very talented and beloved athlete.

Joan was a great leader on the track. In 1965, she became the captain of the San Francisco Bay Bombers. She was a very skilled skater. She made it onto all-star teams for 19 years in a row. Joan was also a kind mentor to others. She would take new skaters, called rookies, under her wing. She helped them learn how to be professionals. She was the highest-paid female athlete during the 1960s and 1970s.

Joan's life in sports started a long time ago. She was born in 1935 in Huntington Beach, California. She grew up in a nearby place called Downey. In 1954, she joined the original Roller Derby. This group was led by a promoter named Leo Seltzer. Her first big team was the Los Angeles Braves. Later, she became a leader for the San Francisco Bay Bombers. She competed against many famous rivals like Ann Calvello and Cathie Read.

Joan was much more than just a roller skater.

She was a very active person who loved many things. While she was a student at Mount St. Mary's College, she played softball. She also enjoyed surfing and canoeing in the water. In 1962, she won a championship for canoe outrigger racing in Hawaii. After her time in Roller Derby, she still played softball in the San Francisco Bay Area. She even married a professional skater named Nick Scopas.

Even though she was a legend, her honors came later. The original Roller Derby stopped working in 1973. Because of this, Joan was not put in the first Hall of Fame. This was a mistake because she was such a big star. In 2004, a new Hall of Fame in Brooklyn, New York, fixed this. They finally added her to their Hall of Fame. Joan passed away in 1997 in Hayward, California. Her life story was so interesting that it was sold to a production company in 1999.
