Cliff's journey began in Saint James, Jamaica. He was born James Chambers on July 30, 1944. He was the second youngest of nine children. He started writing songs while he was still in primary school. He learned by listening to a neighbor's sound system. At age 14, his father took him to Kingston. There, he adopted the stage name Jimmy Cliff. He chose this name as an allusion to the career heights he hoped to scale. He even convinced a man named Leslie Kong to start a recording business just to record his songs.

His early career saw several important milestones. His first major hit was "Hurricane Hattie" when he was 17. He worked with producer Leslie Kong until Kong died in 1971. In 1964, Cliff represented Jamaica at the New York World's Fair. He also appeared in a program called *This is Ska!* alongside other famous artists. He later signed with Island Records and moved to the United Kingdom. His international debut album, *Hard Road to Travel*, arrived in 1967. This album featured the song "Waterfall," which became a hit in Brazil and won the International Song Festival.

One of Cliff's most significant achievements was his work in film. In 1972, he starred in the movie *The Harder They Come*. This was the first major commercial film from Jamaica. Cliff played a character named Vincent "Ivanhoe" Martin. The film tells a story about a young man trying to succeed in the music business. The movie's soundtrack album sold well all over the world. This success helped bring reggae music to an international audience for the very first time.
