It is the largest museum of its kind in all of Europe. The museum tells the history of Jewish people living in Germany. This story goes from the Middle Ages all the way to the present day. Since it opened in 2001, it has become one of the most visited museums in the country. Over eleven million people visited the museum by December 2017. It helps people learn about the culture and lives of Jewish citizens.

The museum is made of several different buildings. One part is an old building called the Kollegienhaus.

The other part is a new building designed by architect Daniel Libeskind. This new building has a sharp, zigzag shape. Some people even call it "Blitz," which means lightning. There is no visible way to walk between the buildings on the ground. Visitors must use an underground passage to get from the old building to the new one. The design uses empty spaces called "Voids" to show things that were lost in history.

Jewish history in Berlin has a long and sometimes difficult past. The very first Jewish Museum in Berlin opened on January 24, 1933. A leader named Karl Schwartz helped start it. It was located near the Neue Synagoge on Oranienburger Straße. The museum wanted to show that Jewish history was a living history. However, the museum was shut down by the Gestapo on November 10, 1938. This happened during a time called the November Pogroms, or Kristallnacht. The museum's items were taken away during this time.

Building the modern museum was a huge project. In 1988, the Berlin government started a competition for a new design. Daniel Libeskind won the competition from 189 different entries. Construction on the $65 million extension began in November 1992.

The museum officially opened to the public on September 9, 2001. Later, a new academy was built in 2011 and 2012. This academy is located in a former flower market hall. It includes a library, an archive, and a special garden for children.

Visitors can see many different things inside the museum.

One famous art piece is called "Shalekhet." It is made of 10,000 metal faces on the floor. Visitors can walk on these metal sheets to hear them clang and rattle. There is also a Garden of Exile with 49 tall pillars.

Forty-eight pillars hold earth from Berlin, but one holds earth from Jerusalem. The museum uses art, music, and even virtual reality to teach people. It connects the past to how people live today.
