A Jet Ski is a brand of personal watercraft made by Kawasaki. This company is from Japan. Many people use the name for any small water vehicle. They also use the name as a verb. This means they say "jet skiing" to describe the activity. Some models are runabout-style. These carry one to three people. The riders sit in a way that looks like a bicycle or a motorcycle.

These watercraft work using a special pump system. The early models used a part called an impeller. This is a pump that is fully enclosed for safety. This design helps the craft stay upright. It can also help the craft circle back to the rider. If a rider falls off, the craft can circle back while idling. This lets the person swim back to the boat.

Kawasaki released the first stand-up model in October 1972. This model was the JS400. It was the first successful personal watercraft in America. Before settling on the name Jet Ski, Kawasaki called them "Water Jet" or "Power Skis." The company also helped start the United States Jet Ski Boating Association. In 1982, this group changed its name to the International Jet Sports Boating Association.

These machines are part of a large world of water sports. You might know other activities like surfing or wakeboarding. Some people even use a flyboard to move over water. Other companies like Yamaha also make watercraft. Yamaha introduced the Super Jet in 1990. There are also different types of engines used today. Some use two-stroke engines while newer ones use four-stroke engines. These changes help the boats follow environmental laws.
