He is widely recognized for his specialized work in motoring, which involves cars and driving. Clarkson has built a massive career through television, books, and newspaper columns. He is perhaps most famous for his roles on the long-running motoring programs Top Gear and The Grand Tour. These shows allowed him to share his strong opinions and humor with a global audience. His work often combines technical knowledge of vehicles with a unique, provocative personality.

Clarkson's professional life follows a path from local journalism to international stardom. He began his career as a traveling salesman for his parents' business. Later, he trained as a journalist with the Rotherham Advertiser in northern England. He worked his way up through various local publications like the Shropshire Star. In these early roles, he reviewed small cars like Peugeots and Fiats. Over seven years, his access grew to include larger vehicles like Ford Granadas and Rovers. Eventually, he reached the level of testing luxury cars like the Aston Martin Lagonda and Lamborghini.

His television career is defined by several distinct stages and formats. He first appeared on the original version of Top Gear in 1988. He secured this role after a twenty-minute screen test where he criticized the Citroen 2CV. In 2002, Clarkson and producer Andy Wilman devised a new, relaunched format for Top Gear. This version featured Clarkson alongside presenters Richard Hammond and James May. This specific team helped the show become the most widely-broadcast factual television program in the world.

After leaving the BBC in 2015, he moved to Amazon Prime Video to host The Grand Tour.

Beyond motoring, Clarkson has explored many different types of media. He hosted the first series of the robot combat show Robot Wars in 1998. Between 1998 and 2000, he hosted his own talk show titled Clarkson. He has also produced documentaries regarding history and engineering. Currently, he hosts the popular game show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?. Since 2019, he has transitioned into farming through his show Clarkson's Farm. This series follows his life at Diddly Squat Farm and has been very popular on Prime Video.

Clarkson's life and career have involved significant financial success and public influence. In 2006, the British public ranked him as the 19th greatest TV star in a poll. In 2007, he reportedly earned £1 million as a presenter and £1.7 million from other media. By 2014, his income from the BBC reached an estimated £14 million for the year. His influence even extends to law through the "Clarkson's clause." This 2024 amendment makes it easier to convert unused agricultural buildings for commercial use. This change happened after he faced difficulties getting permission for a restaurant at his farm.

His personal history includes a notable story regarding his family's business. His parents, Shirley and Edward Clarkson, sold tea cosies and handmade toys. They created two Paddington Bear stuffed toys for Jeremy and his sister, Joanna. Because they did not have the legal rights, the author Michael Bond took action. However, a chance meeting in a lift led to a successful licensing agreement. This deal allowed the family to sell the rights globally through Hamleys. The resulting income paid for Jeremy's education at Hill House School and Repton School.

Whether he is driving to the north magnetic pole or managing a farm, he remains a central figure in British popular culture.
