In 1766, she joined a big trip around the world. This trip was on French ships. At that time, women were not allowed on these ships. To join, Jeanne dressed as a man. She used the name Jean Baret. She worked as an assistant to Philibert Commerson. He was a doctor and a plant expert.

Jeanne did a lot of hard work. She helped Commerson find many new plants. In Rio de Janeiro, they found a flowering vine. They named it Bougainvillea. In Patagonia, she climbed over rocky ground. She carried heavy tools and plants. Commerson called her his "beast of burden" because she was so strong.

People eventually found out she was a woman. This happened when the ship reached Tahiti. Jeanne stayed on the island of Mauritius after Commerson died. She lived there for many years. She even ran a tavern. Jeanne was the first woman to sail all the way around the world.
