Tallien was a leader during a hard time called the Reign of Terror. During this time, many people were treated unfairly. Tallien was sent to the city of Bordeaux. He was known for being very harsh there. He used fear to control the people.

Later, Tallien met a woman named Thérésa Cabarrús. He fell in love with her. Thérésa helped him become more kind. Because of her, he began to show more mercy. The number of executions in Bordeaux went down.

Tallien soon turned against the leader Robespierre. Tallien thought Robespierre was too powerful. In a big meeting, Tallien held up a dagger. He used it to show his anger. This helped his group take power. This change was called the Thermidorian Reaction.

Tallien helped end the Terror. He worked to free many people from jail. He also helped pass rules to make the government more fair.
