She was a major figure during the pre-Code era of American cinema. People often called her the "Blonde Bombshell" or the "Platinum Blonde."

She was very popular for playing "bad girl" characters on screen. Her persona was often described as the "Laughing Vamp." Even though she was only in the film industry for nine years, she became a massive star. The American Film Institute even ranked her number 22 on its list of greatest female screen legends.

Harlow's journey to stardom began with very small jobs. She first worked as an unbilled extra in the film Honor Bound in 1928. At that time, she earned only $7 a day and a box lunch.

She later signed a contract with Hal Roach Studios for $100 per week. Her big break came when she was spotted by Ben Lyon or Arthur Landau. They suggested her to the business magnate Howard Hughes. Hughes needed an actress for the film Hell's Angels. Harlow passed a screen test and signed a five-year contract with him. This role made her an international star almost overnight.

Her early life was spent far from the bright lights of Hollywood. She was born Harlean Harlow Carpenter on March 3, 1911, in Kansas City, Missouri.

Her father, Mont Clair Carpenter, worked as a dentist. Her mother was Jean Poe Carpenter, who later became known as "Mama Jean." The family lived in a house on Olive Street. Harlow was very close to her mother throughout her life. After her parents divorced in 1922, her mother gained sole custody. Harlow even used her mother's maiden name, Harlow, when she started acting.

Harlow became famous for her unique and bright hair color.

While she said her hair was not bleached, it was a very light shade. It was reportedly achieved by using ammonia, Clorox bleach, and Lux soap flakes every week. This process was hard on her naturally ash-blonde hair. Her look was so popular that many fans tried to dye their hair to match. Hughes even offered a $10,000 prize to any beautician who could match her exact shade. No one could win the prize, but the plan made her even more famous. She moved from small roles to huge hits at MGM. These included movies like Red Dust, Dinner at Eight, and Suzy.

Tragedy struck while Harlow was still working hard in Hollywood. She died at the age of 26 from kidney failure.

This happened while she was filming a movie called Saratoga. MGM used body doubles to finish the film for her. The movie was released less than two months after she passed away. It became the highest-grossing film of 1937 and the biggest hit of her career. Today, people still remember her through her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
