Jean-Baptiste Biot was a very important French scientist.

He was a physicist, an astronomer, and a mathematician. He was born in Paris on 21 April 1774. His father, Joseph Biot, worked for the treasury. Biot went to school at Lyceum Louis-le-Grand. Later, he studied at the École Polytechnique in 1794. He spent his life finding out how the world works. His many discoveries helped change how we see science.

Biot discovered how electricity and magnetism work together. In 1820, he worked with Félix Savart on a big project. They created the Biot-Savart law to explain magnetism. They used a long vertical wire in their experiment. They also used a magnetic needle nearby. When they ran an electric current through the wire, the needle moved. This showed that electricity can cause magnetism. This discovery was a huge step for science. It helped people understand the link between these two forces.

Biot also helped prove that rocks from space are real. In 1803, many rocks fell near L'Aigle in France. People called these rocks "stones" at that time. Before this, many people thought these stories were just fantasy. Biot was sent to report on these 3,000 meteorites. He studied them and found they were from outer space. His work supported ideas from a scientist named Ernst Chladni. Now, we know meteorites help us understand our Solar System.

Biot was a very busy man with many honors. He was a professor at the Collège de France around 1800. In 1804, he took a hot-air balloon ride. He flew 4,000 metres high with Joseph Louis Gay-Lussac. They wanted to measure the Earth's magnetic field. He was also a member of the French Academy of Sciences. He received the Rumford Medal in 1840 for his work. He was even named a commander in the Legion of Honour.

Many things in your life come from his work. He studied the polarization of light. This is how light waves move in certain ways. His work on light helps make modern technology work. For example, LCD screens on computers use polarized light. These screens use filters to control how light looks. Even photography uses these filters to stop unwanted reflections. Biot's ideas about light are still used in our gadgets today. He died in Paris on 3 February 1862.
