These bones were found at a place called Trinil near the Solo River. One year later, the team found a long thighbone. This bone was shaped like a human thighbone. It suggested that the creature could stand and walk upright. This was a very important clue for the researchers.

A scientist named Eugène Dubois led the search for these fossils. He left his job in 1887 to find the ancestors of humans. He even worked as a military surgeon to pay for his work. He moved to Java in 1890 to continue his search. Dubois originally named the find "man-ape." He later changed the name to Pithecanthropus erectus. In August 1891, the excavation team uncovered a molar tooth and a skullcap. The skullcap, known as Trinil 2, had a long cranium with a heavy browridge and a sagittal keel. One year later, in August 1892, the team found a long femur, or thighbone. This bone was found about 50 feet away from the first discovery. Because the femur was shaped like a human one, it suggested the individual could stand and walk upright.

Eugène Dubois led the team that found these important remains. Dubois was a Dutch anatomist who became very determined to find the ancestors of humans. In 1887, he left his academic career to search for these fossils in the Dutch East Indies. Because he had no government funding, he joined the Dutch East Indies Army as a military surgeon. He first searched for fossils in Sumatra before moving to Java in 1890. He was eventually assisted by two engineers and fifty convict laborers during his work.

Dubois used several different names for the fossils as his ideas changed. He first called the specimen Anthropopithecus, which means "man-ape." He chose this because the skullcap seemed closer to an ape than a human. Later, he renamed it Pithecanthropus erectus, meaning "upright ape-man." He believed these fossils were the "missing link" between apes and humans. In the 1930s, he even claimed the creature was built like a "giant gibbon" to support his theory.

The discovery caused massive scientific controversy throughout the late 1800s. Within just ten years, almost eighty books or articles were published about the find. Many scientists disagreed with Dubois's idea that the fossils were a transitional form. Some argued the bones belonged to apes, while others claimed they were modern humans. Many experts believed Java Man was simply a primitive side branch of evolution. They did not think it was directly related to modern humans at all.

As more fossils were found, the scientific understanding of Java Man shifted. In 1927, Davidson Black found teeth in China that became known as Peking Man. Scientists like Franz Weidenreich noticed that Peking Man and Java Man were very similar. This led Ernst Mayr to rename both groups Homo erectus in 1950. This reclassification placed them directly on the human evolutionary tree.

Other fossils, like the Mojokerto child and Solo Man, were also found in Java by G. H. R. von Koenigswald. These discoveries helped confirm that many early humans lived in the region.

Today, the history of these fossils continues to evolve. The remains were kept in the Netherlands for a long time. However, on September 26, 2025, the Dutch government announced a major change. They will return the entire Dubois collection to Indonesia. This decision was made because of the circumstances of how the fossils were originally acquired.
