Jamie Uys was a famous film director from South Africa.

He was well known for making funny movies that people all over the world enjoyed. His most popular film was a comedy called The Gods Must Be Crazy, released in 1980.

This movie tells a story about a glass bottle that falls from a plane into the Kalahari Desert. A group of people from a San tribe finds the bottle in the sand. Because they have never seen a modern object like this, they think it came from the Gods. A man named N!xau is chosen to take the bottle back to the heavens. This film was a huge success in many places like Europe, Japan, and North America.

Before he started making movies, Uys had a very different life. He lived in a town called Boksburg and worked as a mathematics teacher.

He and his wife, Hettie, also ran farms and trading posts near the Palala River. Uys even served as a local magistrate, which is a type of judge. He once said that every Tuesday he had to swim through rivers to reach his court. This shows how much he loved the wild outdoors. He later moved to a quiet place called Paradise Beach near Jeffreys Bay. He lived in a simple A-frame house that had no electricity for many years.

Uys was a very busy filmmaker who directed 24 different films.

His very first movie was called Daar doer in die bosveld, made in 1951. He also worked with a producer named Tommie Meyer to run a film company. One of his other big projects was a documentary called Animals Are Beautiful People in 1974.

This film showed the plants and animals of South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, and Zimbabwe. It featured many creatures like elephants, warthogs, baboons, and ostriches. The film was so good that it won a Golden Globe award.

Some of his movies were very silly and made people laugh.

In 1977, he made a film called Funny People. This was a type of comedy where people were put in funny, unexpected spots. One part of the movie featured a postbox that seemed to talk to people.

He also made a movie called Lost in the Desert in 1969. This story was about a boy named Dirkie Hayes trying to survive in the desert. Interestingly, Jamie Uys played the boy's father, Anton, in that movie. His son, Wynand Uys, played the role of the boy, Dirkie.

Outside of his movie work, Uys had many interesting hobbies.

He was a person who loved nature and spent time studying plants. He was an amateur botanist, which means he studied plants for fun. He kept a herbarium, which is a collection of dried plant specimens.

He also enjoyed riding his bicycle through the open fields, known as the veld. When he was not outside, he liked to build small model airplanes.

Jamie Uys passed away in 1996 in Johannesburg at the age of 74. He left behind a long list of films that people still remember today.
