He was born in Germany in 1882. He loved science more than law. He studied physics and chemistry at the University of Berlin.

In 1914, Franck and Gustav Hertz did a famous test. They used a tube filled with mercury gas. They sent electrons through the gas. When an electron hit a mercury atom, it lost a set amount of energy. This showed that electrons live in specific levels inside an atom. This helped prove the Bohr model of the atom.

For this work, they won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1925.

Franck was also a kind leader. He helped women find jobs in science. He helped Jewish scientists find work in new countries. Later, he moved to the United States. He worked at the University of Chicago. During World War II, he worked on the Manhattan Project. He wrote a report about atomic bombs. He said they should not be used without a warning.
