He was born in 1930 in La Paz, Bolivia. Both of his parents were teachers, so he grew up around learning. He taught math and physics in Bolivia for twelve years. Later, he moved to the United States to start a new life. He worked many jobs while he taught himself English. He even earned another college degree during this time.

In 1974, he started teaching at Garfield High School in East Los Angeles. At first, he felt very discouraged by his students. He even asked for his old job back in Bolivia. But then, he found twelve students who wanted to learn algebra. He decided to stay and teach them hard math. He chose to teach AP Calculus, which is a very advanced math class. He wanted to show his students they could control their own futures.

Escalante worked very hard to help his students succeed. He told them that math was a language for success. He promised they could get jobs in engineering or computers. He did not like to rank students from first to last. Instead, he told everyone to press themselves as hard as possible. He even made students answer a homework question before entering the room. He believed that hard work was the key for both teachers and students.

His success became famous all over the country. In 1982, eighteen of his students passed a big calculus exam. Some people thought the scores were strange at first. They asked the students to take the test again to be sure. The students did well and kept their high scores.

Many people honored Jaime Escalante for his great work. He received the Presidential Medal for Excellence in Education from Ronald Reagan. He also won many honorary doctor degrees from different colleges. Even the stars of his movie and famous leaders visited him. In 2016, the United States Postal Service made a special stamp with his face on it. He died in 2010, but people still remember his amazing teaching.
