He spent his life sharing the secrets of the deep ocean. Cousteau was a naval officer and an oceanographer. This means he studied the physical world of the sea. He wanted to show people places that were usually hidden. His work helped everyone understand how amazing the underwater world is. He used films and books to bring the ocean to people everywhere.

One of his biggest achievements was helping to invent the Aqua-Lung. This was a self-contained underwater breathing apparatus, or SCUBA.

Before this, divers could not stay underwater for very long. Cousteau worked with Émile Gagnan to add a demand regulator. This part helps control the air so divers can breathe easily. This invention made it possible to explore the ocean floor for a long time. It changed diving from a short task into a real way to explore.

Cousteau's journey into the sea began after a life change. He was born in Saint-André-de-Cubzac, France, in 1910. He originally wanted to be a naval pilot. However, a car accident broke both of his arms. This accident changed his plans and led him to the ocean. In 1936, he began his first underwater experiments in Toulon. He used simple goggles to start his deep-sea adventures.

This film was special because it used color to show the deep sea. It won a big prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 1956. It also won an Academy Award in 1957. Cousteau also used a famous ship named *Calypso*. He turned this ship into a mobile laboratory for his research.

He even built a small vehicle called a diving saucer to travel on the sea floor.

Cousteau's work connects to how we protect our planet today. He studied how animals like porpoises use sound to find their way. He also fought to stop people from dumping waste into the sea. He wanted to keep the Mediterranean Sea clean for all living things. His projects, like the Conshelf underwater villages, showed how humans might live under the waves.

Today, we still use the breathing tools he helped create to explore the blue world.
