He was the first African American to play in Major League Baseball during the modern era. This was a huge moment because it helped end racial segregation in professional baseball. For a long time, Black players were only allowed to play in the Negro leagues. By joining the Brooklyn Dodgers, Robinson showed that talent belongs on every field. His courage on the diamond helped start a bigger change in how people were treated in America.

In college, he became the first athlete at UCLA to win varsity letters in four sports. He played football, basketball, baseball, and track and field. He was a star on the football field and a champion in the long jump. Even in baseball, he showed great skill by stealing home during his first game. He used his strength and speed to compete at the highest levels. His ability to master so many sports showed his incredible dedication.

His path to the Major Leagues was not easy.

Robinson was born in Georgia and grew up in California. During World War II, he served in the Army as a second lieutenant. While in the military, he faced unfair treatment on a segregated bus. He refused to move to the back and was taken into custody. After his service, he played for the Kansas City Monarchs in the Negro leagues. There, he caught the eye of Branch Rickey, who wanted him to join the Dodgers.

Robinson's professional career was filled with amazing achievements and awards.

In his first year in 1947, he won the Rookie of the Year Award. He was also an All-Star for six years in a row from 1949 to 1954. In 1949, he became the first Black player to win the National League Most Valuable Player Award. He played in six World Series and helped the Dodgers win a championship in 1955. These successes proved he was one of the best players in the world.

Even after baseball, Robinson continued to lead and inspire others.

He worked as a television analyst and even became a vice president at a large company. He helped start a bank in Harlem to support the Black community. In 1997, Major League Baseball did something very special for him. They retired his uniform number, 42, for every single team to honor him. Now, every year on April 15, players wear number 42 for Jackie Robinson Day.
