Scully had a unique way of describing the games. He used a lyrical style with beautiful words. He had a distinctive tenor voice that people loved. In the early days of the Los Angeles Dodgers, fans did something interesting. They brought small transistor radios to the games. They wanted to hear his play-by-play descriptions clearly. Even when the team moved to the large Dodger Stadium, fans still used radios. This helped them follow the action through his voice.

His journey into broadcasting began in New York. He was born in the Bronx in 1927. He grew up in Manhattan and loved baseball. He even attended Fordham University to study English. While there, he played baseball and worked as a student broadcaster. He later served in the United States Navy for two years. After the Navy, he sent many letters to radio stations. One station in Washington, D.C., finally gave him a job.

Scully worked on many different types of sports. Between 1975 and 1982, he worked for CBS Sports. He called football games for the National Football League. He also called golf contests on the PGA Tour. He even worked on the Masters Tournament. From 1983 to 1989, he was the lead baseball announcer for NBC Sports. He also called the World Series on CBS Radio during two different times. He was a very busy and talented man.

His long career earned him many great honors. He received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He was also put into the National Radio Hall of Fame. In 1982, he won the Ford C. Frick Award. President Barack Obama gave him the Presidential Medal of Freedom. The Dodgers even renamed a street near their stadium. It is now called Vin Scully Avenue.

He passed away in 2022 at his home in California.
