The jackfruit, known scientifically as Artocarpus heterophyllus, is a remarkable species of tree. It belongs to the Moraceae family, which includes figs, mulberries, and breadfruit.

This tree is famous for producing the largest tree-borne fruit in the world. These massive fruits can reach incredible sizes in length, diameter, and weight. A single mature tree is highly productive. It can produce about 200 fruits every year. Older, more established trees can bear as many as 500 fruits annually. Because of its high yield, the jackfruit is a vital resource for food security in many developing countries.

Understanding how a jackfruit forms requires looking at its unique structure. The jackfruit is a multiple fruit. This means it is not just one single flower, but a fusion of hundreds or even thousands of individual flowers.

These flowers grow through a process called cauliflory, meaning they develop directly on the trunk, branches, or twigs. The tree is monoecious, which means it carries both male and female flowers on the same plant. The male flowers are greenish and hairy, containing tiny pollen grains about 60 microns in diameter. The female flowers have a fleshy base and contain an ovary. After pollination, these many ovaries fuse together to create the large, single fruit we recognize.

The jackfruit tree itself has very specific physical characteristics. It is an evergreen tree with a relatively short trunk and a dense treetop. The trunk can reach heights of 20 meters, and the diameter can reach 1 meter.

The bark is reddish-brown and smooth to the touch. If the bark is injured, the tree releases a thick, milky sap. The leaves are thick, leathery, and gummy. They are arranged spirally on the branches. On older trees, the leaf blades are dark green and rounded with smooth edges. Each leaf has a prominent main nerve and six to eight lateral nerves extending from the sides.

History shows that the jackfruit has been a part of many cultures for centuries. The name "jackfruit" likely has Portuguese origins. It may stem from the Malayalam word "chakka." This connection traces back to 1499, when the Portuguese Empire arrived at Calicut on the Malabar Coast in India.

In 1563, the physician Garcia de Orta recorded the fruit in his writings. Later, Hendrik van Rheede documented it in the 1600s. Some historians, including botanist Ralph Randles Stewart, suggested the name might honor William Jack. He was a Scottish botanist who worked in Bengal, Sumatra, and Malaya during the early 1800s.

Cultivation and ecology play huge roles in how the jackfruit spreads. The tree thrives in tropical lowlands, particularly from South Asia to Southeast Asia and Oceania.

In some areas, like Brazil, the jackfruit has become an invasive species. This happens because small mammals like the common marmoset and coati eat the fallen fruit. These animals then disperse the seeds, allowing the trees to compete with native species. Pollination is also a complex process. Stingless bees are important pollinators. There is also a suspected three-way mutualism involving the flower, a specific fungus, and a species of gall midge.

The fruit itself is composed of several distinct parts. The exterior is a hard, gummy shell covered in small, hexagonal tubercles. Inside, there is a fibrous, whitish core called a rachis. Radiating from this core are many individual fruitlets. Each fruitlet contains a seed protected by a fleshy, sweet layer called an aril.

An average fruit is made of 27% edible seed coat, 15% edible seeds, 20% white pulp, and 10% core. The ripe fruit has a strong aroma that smells like a mix of pineapple and banana. This scent comes from specific chemical compounds like ethyl isovalerate.

People use every part of the jackfruit in different ways. When the fruit is ripe, the sweet arils are used in desserts, cakes, or even ice cream. In Indonesia, it is used in treats like es teler.

The seeds are also edible once they are boiled, baked, or roasted. They can taste similar to chestnuts or Brazil nuts. When the fruit is unripe, it is often called "vegetable meat." This is because its mild taste and meaty texture make it a popular choice for vegan dishes.

It is commonly used in South and Southeast Asian cuisines to create meat-like textures in various meals.
