Jaú National Park

geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Jaú National Park is a huge forest in Brazil. It sits in the state of Amazonas. This park is one of the largest forest reserves in South America. It is also a World Heritage Site. This means the place is very special to the whole world.

The park covers parts of three areas called municipalities. These are Barcelos, Codajás, and Novo Airão. It is located northwest of the city of Manaus. The park holds the entire Jaú River basin. This basin sits between the Unini River and the Carabinani River.

The land in the park has two main parts. One part is a high plateau with hills. These hills have flat tops and deep valleys. The other part is a lower plateau. Some areas have poor drainage and stay wet. This creates large areas of seasonally flooded land. There are also some lakes that stay full all year. The weather is often warm and very wet.

Rain falls a lot in this part of the Amazon. The average yearly rainfall is over 2,300 mm. The wettest months are March and September. During these months, the sun's heat causes heavy rain. Temperatures usually stay between 23 and 27 degrees Celsius. The name Jaú comes from a large fish. This fish is the gilded catfish. The Jaú River is named after it.

Many living things call this park home. About 400 kinds of plants have been found there. Scientists have also recorded 263 kinds of fish. Some of these fish are new to science. You might see a jaguar or a margay here. Giant otters and Amazonian manatees also live in the water.

People work hard to protect this black water ecosystem. The park helps with science and nature education. It also allows for sustainable tourism. In 2000, UNESCO named it a World Heritage Site. In 2003, it joined a larger group called the Central Amazon Conservation Complex. This group includes Anavilhanas National Park. It also includes the Amanã and Mamirauá reserves.
