János spent years studying parallel lines. His father warned him to stop. He said the work was too hard. But János did not stop. He found a new way to look at shapes. He called this absolute geometry. This work showed that different math worlds could exist. It helped math become more about ideas. It was not just about the physical world.

A famous math expert named Gauss called him a genius. Gauss had thought about these ideas too. This caused some trouble between János and his father. János also learned that another man named Lobachevsky did similar work.

János was very talented in other ways. He spoke many languages like Latin and French. He also played the violin. When he died, he left 20,000 pages of math notes. A crater on the Moon is named after him.
