He wrote many novels and short stories during his long career. His work often looked at how technology and the media affect our minds. People even created a new word, "Ballardian," to describe his unique style. This word describes worlds that look like his stories. These settings might be bleak, man-made, or filled with strange modern things.

Ballard's writing often focused on the inner lives of people. He was part of a group called New Wave science fiction. These writers used science fiction ideas to explore human psychology. Instead of just looking at outer space, they looked at "inner space." This meant they explored the feelings and thoughts inside a person. He also wrote about how people interact with new tools and big cities. Some of his books, like "High-Rise," show how people act in large buildings.

During the Second Sino-Japanese War, his family had to move to stay safe. Later, they were held in the Lunghua Civilian Assembly Centre. Ballard lived in a two-story building called G-block with many other families. He attended school there with teachers who were also prisoners. These difficult years inspired his famous book, "Empire of the Sun."

Ballard had many different jobs before he became a full-time writer. He studied medicine at King's College, Cambridge, to become a psychiatrist. However, he decided to study English literature instead. He worked as an advertising copywriter and an encyclopedia salesman. In 1954, he joined the Royal Air Force and trained in Canada. It was there that he wrote his first science fiction story. He finally became a professional writer in 1956 after publishing short stories.

Many of Ballard's stories were so interesting that they became movies. The book "Empire of the Sun" was made into a film by Steven Spielberg. His novel "Crash" was also turned into a movie by David Cronenberg. Even his story "High-Rise" was adapted for the screen in 2015. His writing sometimes caused big debates and even legal trouble. This happened because some of his stories featured famous people. He lived in Shepperton, Surrey, until he passed away in 2009.
