Music was a central part of Burgess's life and identity. He first became fascinated by music after hearing a flute solo on his home-built radio. He described this moment as a spiritual experience that he could not put into words. Although his family thought there was no money in music, he was determined. He taught himself to play the piano when he was about 14 years old. Throughout his life, he composed over 250 musical works. Burgess actually considered himself to be just as much a composer as he was an author.

His early life in Manchester, England, included many difficult moments. He was born on February 25, 1917, to Irish Catholic parents. Sadly, his mother and his eight-year-old sister both died during the 1918 flu pandemic. Burgess later felt that his father might have resented him for surviving. He grew up in a time called the Great Depression. Later, his father passed away in 1938 from influenza and other illnesses. These early experiences shaped the man he would eventually become.

Burgess spent many years working in different roles around the world.
