Many people love the league because it brings cities together. The clubs try to build strong bonds with their local towns and citizens. This creates a sense of pride for everyone in the community. It is one of the most successful professional leagues in all of Asia.

Learning how the league works is quite interesting. The teams play matches to earn points during a season. Currently, the team with the most points is named the champion.

At the end of the season, the bottom two clubs are relegated. The club in 16th place must enter a special playoff series. They play against a winner from the J2 League to stay in the top flight. This system keeps every game very important for the teams. It makes sure that only the best clubs stay in the J1 League.

Before this professional league began, football in Japan was different. In 1965, the Japan Soccer League was formed with amateur clubs. These players were not professionals like they are today.

The league saw a boom in the late 1960s. This happened after the national team won a bronze medal at the 1968 Olympics. However, things changed in the 1980s when attendance began to drop. The Japan Football Association wanted to fix this. They decided to form a new professional league in 1992.

The J.League officially kicked off its first season in 1993.

It started with only ten clubs in the league. These clubs included teams like Gamba Osaka and Nagoya Grampus Eight. In 1999, the league changed to a two-division system. This created the J1 and J2 leagues we know now. The league also shared a big plan called the Hundred Year Vision. This plan aims to support 100 professional clubs across Japan by the year 2092.
