This means he held his opponent down to end the match. People admired his amazing physique and his skill in the sport. He remains a legendary figure in the world of wrestling.

Winning a match quickly was one of his greatest talents. In the 1977 World Cup, he set a record by winning in just 27 seconds. This was a very fast pin in World Cup history. He also had a very clean way of competing. During the 1972 Olympics, he won every single match by fall. He did not receive any foul points during that entire tournament. This showed how much control he had over his matches.

His journey to greatness started with hard work and different jobs. He was the sixth child in a large family of ten. As a young boy, he helped his father in a blacksmith workshop. He even worked as a lumberjack in the Taiga forest. He did not start wrestling until he was 18 years old. Before that, he wanted to be a football goalkeeper. He eventually became a Master of Sports in sambo wrestling.

Between 1970 and 1980, Yarygin won almost every major contest. He won gold medals at the 1972 and 1976 Olympics. He was also a world champion in 1973. He won the World Cup five different times. In those World Cup matches, he never lost a single time. He also won European championships in 1972 and between 1975 and 1976. These victories made him one of the best in history.

Even after he stopped competing, his name stayed important. He coached the Soviet freestyle wrestling team from 1982 to 1992. Later, he led the Russian Wrestling Federation.
