His journey to the top required incredible focus and training. In high school, he was a three-time state champion in Iowa. He had a record of 64 wins and zero losses. Later, he went to Iowa State University to wrestle in college. From 1967 to 1970, he became a two-time national champion. His college record was 117 wins and only one loss. Life was not always easy for Dan during his youth. When he was 15 years old, his sister was killed by a teenager in his neighborhood. This was a very sad and difficult time for him. However, Dan did not let this tragedy stop his training. He used the experience to find even more determination. He focused his energy on wrestling to help him move forward. This strength of spirit helped him reach the highest levels of sport.

Dan's success in international matches was truly amazing. Between 1971 and 1973, he competed in freestyle wrestling around the world. At the 1971 World Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria, he won a gold medal. He won all his matches there without letting anyone score a point. He did the same thing at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, West Germany.
