Bunin had a very special way of using words. Some people called his style "Bunin brocade." This means his writing felt rich and textured, like a fine fabric. He believed that prose could have a poetic rhythm. He often looked for the true rhythm of a story. Once he found that rhythm, the story would flow naturally. He was very careful with every word he chose.

His childhood in the Russian countryside shaped his work. He grew up on a family estate in the Voronezh province. He spent his days among vast fields and huge snowdrifts. Bunin had an extraordinary way of seeing the world. He could hear a marmot whistle from far away. He even said he could feel joy from the smell of old books.
