His family came from a place called Balkh. Some people think they were related to the old Parthian families. Others think they might have been of Hephthalite descent. Regardless of their exact roots, they spoke and promoted the Persian language. They used old titles to show they were continuing a great empire. Ismail's rule helped the Samanids become a very strong force in the region.

Ismail was born in Farghana in the year 849. His brother, Nasr I, became the ruler in 864 or 865. During this time, Ismail was sent to manage the city of Bukhara. The people there liked him because he brought peace. Later, Ismail and his brother had a disagreement about tax money. They fought for control, and Ismail won the struggle. However, he did not take his brother's formal title. He waited until Nasr died in August 892 to become the official ruler.

Once he was in power, Ismail worked hard to grow his empire. He built a strong army and helped the economy grow. He made his capital, Bukhara, one of the most famous cities in the Islamic world.

He invited many smart scholars, artists, and doctors to live there. During his reign, people translated the Qur'an into Persian for the first time. He also built many mosques and schools called madrassas. These buildings helped spread new ideas and religious learning.

Ismail was also a very brave general who fought many battles. In the spring of 900, he faced a huge army from the Saffarids. Ismail had only 20,000 horsemen to fight against 70,000 enemy soldiers. His soldiers even had wooden stirrups and very little armor. Despite this, Ismail won the battle and captured the enemy leader, Amr-i Laith. He also won battles in northern Iran to take control of Tabaristan.

These victories helped keep his lands safe from raids.

Ismail died after a long sickness on November 24, 907. His son, Ahmad Samani, became the next ruler. Even hundreds of years later, people still remember him.
