Snaefell is the wettest place on the island.
People have lived on this island for a very long time. Humans arrived by sea before 6500 BC. Early people were hunters, fishers, and farmers. They built large stone monuments like Cashtal yn Ard. Many different groups have ruled the island over the years. In the 9th century, Norsemen from Scandinavia settled there. They formed the Kingdom of the Isles. Later, the island was part of the Kingdom of Norway. For a time, it was also ruled by Scotland and England. In 1765, the British Crown took over the lordship of the island.

The geography of the island is defined by its position in the sea. It is a long island with a central valley. This valley separates ranges of hills in the north and south. The northern plain is relatively flat due to glacial deposits from western Scotland.
The climate is described as a temperate oceanic climate. This means the weather is influenced by the surrounding Irish Sea. The sea helps keep surface temperatures moderate. This stability makes air frost a rare event, occurring about ten times per year. However, the island receives significant rainfall. South-westerly winds accumulate moisture as they cross the sea. Snaefell is the wettest location, receiving about 1,000 mm of rain annually.
Human history on the island began long before recorded dates. Humans arrived by sea before 6500 BC during the Mesolithic Period. As sea levels rose after the last ice age, the island became isolated. Early inhabitants were hunter-gatherers and fishermen. During the Neolithic Period, farming began and people built megalithic monuments. Examples include Cashtal yn Ard and King Orry's Grave. Later, the Bronze Age saw the creation of stone-lined graves with ornamental containers.
Many different powers have controlled the island through the centuries. In the 5th century, Irish missionaries spread Christianity. By the 9th century, Norsemen settled and founded the Kingdom of the Isles. This kingdom included Mann and the Hebrides.
The Isle of Man is home to Tynwald, a very old parliament. Tynwald is claimed to be the oldest continuous legislature in the world. It made history in 1881. That year, it became the first national legislative body to grant women the right to vote in general elections. This right excluded married women at that time. Today, the government manages all domestic matters. The island also has its own identity, which is reflected in its passport.
The modern economy relies on several specific sectors. The island is a destination for offshore banking and low taxes. While this brings wealth, it has also led to challenges like money laundering and financial crime. The island is also famous for the TT Motorcycle Races and the Manx cat, a breed known for having short or no tails.
