People use many names for colors. One group made a way to name them all. This is the ISCC–NBS system.

Two groups worked together to make this system. They started in the 1930s. They wanted a way for everyone to use the same names. This helps people in science, art, and industry. It stops each job from making its own names.

The system has 13 basic color groups. Ten of these are hue names. Hue is the name of a color, like red or blue. Three groups are neutral colors. You can add extra words to these names. These words are called modifiers. Using these words makes 267 different color names.

Each color name fits into a special block. These blocks are parts of a color space. The blocks do not overlap. This means every color fits into exactly one block. The blocks look like a piece of pie with a bite taken out.

In 1955, the NBS made a color dictionary. It helped link many different color systems together. This made it easier for people to understand each other.
