ISCC–NBS system

physical science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Have you ever tried to describe a color to a friend? It can be quite hard to pick the right word. The ISCC–NBS system was made to solve this problem. It is a special way to name colors using set terms. This system helps people in many different jobs talk about color. Scientists, artists, and factory workers can all use the same names.

This stops every industry from making up its own confusing names.

The system works by using a set of basic categories. There are 13 basic color categories in total. Ten of these are hue names, which are names like red or blue. The other three categories are neutral colors. You can also add modifiers, which are extra words, to these names. By combining a hue name with a modifier, you can create 267 different categories.

Not every modifier works with every hue, though. For example, you cannot have a "brilliant brown."

This system was first built in the 1930s. Two groups worked together to create it. One group was the Inter-Society Color Council, or ISCC. The other group was the National Bureau of Standards, or NBS. The ISCC was made of people from many American trade groups. In 1939, the system was published in a special journal.

The ISCC formally approved the system at that time.

Each color name fits into a specific "block" of space. These blocks are part of the Munsell color system. The blocks do not overlap each other. This means every single color falls into exactly one block. The shape of these blocks is very interesting. They look like a piece of pie with the point bitten off.

In 1955, the NBS published The Color Names Dictionary to help people. In 1965, they also published Centroid Color Charts.

You might see these color ideas in your daily life. The system helps define colors for things like plastic and paint. It is also used for building materials and even soil. Scientists use it in fields like botany and geology.

In 1976, a book called Color: Universal Language and Dictionary of Names was published. This book is the main source for the system. It helps keep color names organized for everyone to use.
