She lived from 1831 to 1904 and saw much of the world. Isabella was known for her great curiosity about new places. She was also a very brave person. She became the first woman elected as a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. This was a very big honor for a female explorer. Her life shows how travel can change a person completely.

Isabella's journey began because of her health. As a child, she dealt with many hard problems. She had a spinal condition, bad headaches, and trouble sleeping. Doctors told her that an outdoor life would help her feel better. In 1854, she took a trip to the United States. She wrote letters about this journey. These letters became her first book, called An Englishwoman in America. This trip started her lifelong love of traveling to far lands.

She traveled to many exciting places in the 1870s. First, she visited Hawaii, where she climbed two huge volcanoes. These were named Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa. In 1873, she went to the Rocky Mountains in Colorado. She rode her horse facing forward instead of sideways. This helped her travel over 800 miles through the mountains. She wrote a very famous book about this time.
