He was born in London on January 23, 1814. His father was a famous Scottish poet named Allan Cunningham. Alexander grew up to become a skilled engineer in the British Army. He spent many years working in India as a member of the Bengal Engineers. During his time there, he built many things like stone bridges.

He even worked on a bridge over the Morar River in 1844. These early jobs helped him learn about the land and its people.

While he was working as an engineer, Alexander found a new passion. He became very interested in ancient history and old objects. In 1833, he met a man named James Prinsep in India. Prinsep became a close friend and a teacher to him. Prinsep shared his own love for Indian history and old things. This friendship changed the way Alexander spent his time. He began to look closely at old buildings and art.

He wanted to know the stories behind these old items.

Alexander did not just guess where old cities were located. He used a very careful way to find them. He would travel to different places to do field surveys. This means he went to the actual spots to look for clues. He used old travel stories from people like Xuanzang to help him. For example, he found the city of Taxila by checking travel times. He noticed that old records said the trip took three days. This helped him find the right place near the Indus River.

He was very good at using clues to solve mysteries.

He is often called the father of archaeology in India. This is because he organized the way people studied the past. In 1861, he was appointed as an archaeological surveyor. Later, he became the first Director-General of the Archaeological Survey of India. He studied more than 725 different historical sites. He also taught local assistants how to help with important digs. Alexander wrote many books to share what he discovered. He wrote about things like the history of Buddhism and old coins.

His work helped make history a real science in India.

Alexander's life was full of many different discoveries. He collected many beautiful things like gold and silver coins. He also found many pieces of Buddhist jewelry and art. Even though some items were lost on a shipwreck in 1884, many went to the British Museum. His work connects the ancient world to the world we live in today. We can still see the results of his hard work in museums. He showed us how to map, photograph, and save old things. Because of him, we know much more about ancient India.
