Much of the Earth's inner and outer core is made of iron. This metal also helps create the Earth's magnetic field.

Iron is important for your body, too. An adult human has about 4 grams of iron. It lives in proteins like hemoglobin.

These proteins help your blood carry oxygen. They also help your muscles store oxygen. You must eat iron to keep these levels healthy.

Pure iron looks like a silvery-gray mirror. But iron can change when it meets water and oxygen. This change makes rust.

Rust is brown or black. Unlike some other metals, rust flakes off. This lets the air touch even more fresh metal. This way, the metal keeps to corrode.

People use iron to make many things. They mix it to make steel. Steel is used in many big industries because it is cheap and strong.
