Ionization

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Everything is made of tiny parts called atoms. Atoms can change into something called an ion. This happens through ionization. Ionization is a way to give an atom a charge. An atom gets a charge by gaining or losing electrons. Electrons are even smaller parts of the atom.

To make an ion, an atom needs a certain amount of power. We call this amount ionization energy.

How does ionization happen? It can happen when atoms bump into other things. They might hit other atoms or tiny particles. They can also hit light, which is called electromagnetic radiation.

Electron avalanche

Sometimes, one event starts a chain reaction. This is called an avalanche. One electron hits an atom and lets out more electrons. These new electrons hit more atoms. This makes a big rush of ions.

This can even happen in space. Solar wind can hit the Earth. This makes beautiful lights called auroras. We use ionization in many tools. It helps in medical treatments and in lamps.
