Everything is made of tiny parts called atoms. Most atoms have no charge. But some atoms become ions.

Ions
Ions

An ion is an atom with an electric charge. This happens when the number of protons and electrons are not equal. Protons have a positive charge. Electrons have a negative charge.

There are two main kinds of ions. A cation is a positively charged ion. It has fewer electrons than protons.

Ionic bonding
Ionic bonding

An anion is a negatively charged ion. It has more electrons than protons. Cations and anions pull toward each other. This pull is called electrostatic force. This force helps them form things like salt.

Ions can be found almost everywhere. They are in the sun and the ocean. They even give gemstones their bright colors. Some ions are made of just one atom. These are called monatomic ions. Other ions have two or more atoms. We call these polyatomic ions.

Scientists use small signs to show the charge. A plus or minus sign shows the charge. If the charge is big, they add a number too.
