These roads link many parts of the United States. They even reach Alaska, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico.

Long ago, driving across the country was very hard. In 1919, a group of soldiers drove trucks across the land. Dwight D. Eisenhower was a young officer on that trip. He saw roads filled with dust, holes, and pits.

Later, he became president. He wanted to make better roads for the whole nation.

In 1956, a new law helped build these roads. Most are freeways, which are roads built for fast travel.

They do not have traffic lights or intersections. Instead, they have special ways to enter and exit. They also have barriers to keep cars safe.

Building these roads cost about $114 billion. The work was very big. It changed many cities. In some places, new roads replaced old neighborhoods. This moved one million people from their homes. The system is still growing today.
