Interchange (road)

When big roads meet, they often use special junctions. We call these interchanges.

In a normal intersection, roads cross on the same level. This means cars might have to stop. An interchange uses grade separation. This means one road goes over or under another. This lets traffic keep moving without stopping.

There are many types of interchanges. A cloverleaf interchange looks like a four-leaf clover from above. It uses loop ramps to help cars turn. However, these can cause weaving. Weaving is when cars must cross paths in a small space.

A cloverstack is a mix of designs. It uses loops for slow traffic and flyover ramps for fast traffic.

Some interchanges are very tall. We call these stack interchanges. They can have four levels of roads. People sometimes call them "spaghetti junctions" because they look like tangled noodles.

Another kind is the turbine interchange. These use ramps that spiral around a center. This design uses fewer levels than a stack. Some interchanges even use a roundabout. This is a circular road that helps cars switch highways.
