It is a special part of the United Nations. This group helps many countries share information and talk to each other. It makes sure that technology works well all over the world. The ITU manages many things like the internet and satellite orbits.

It also helps with things like TV broadcasting and radio. This work helps people stay connected no matter where they live. Without these rules, our global technology might not work together smoothly.

There are many ways the ITU helps the world work. First, it manages the radio spectrum. This is the range of signals used for radio and phones. Next, it helps assign orbits for satellites in space. This keeps satellites from bumping into each other. The group also creates technical standards. Standards are sets of rules that make sure different tools can work together.

The ITU also works to improve technology in the developing world. It helps with broadband internet and even things like space weather. This step-by-step work keeps our modern world running.

The ITU is a very old organization. It started on May 17, 1865. Back then, it was called the International Telegraph Union. It was the first formal and permanent international organization.

In 1865, leaders from 20 European states met in Paris. They wanted to make rules for telegraph machines. They also decided to use Morse code as an alphabet. Later, in 1906, a new group for radio was formed in Berlin. In 1932, these groups joined to become the ITU we know today. It became part of the United Nations in 1949.

Today, the ITU has many members and leaders. It is based in Geneva, Switzerland. The group includes 194 different countries.

It also includes about 900 businesses and schools. Doreen Bogdan-Martin is the current secretary-general. She is the first woman to lead the ITU. The group is split into three main sectors. One sector is called ITU-R, which handles radio. Another is ITU-T, which focuses on making technical standards. The third sector is called ITU Development.

You can see the ITU's work in your own home. When you watch TV, the ITU helps with those signals. When you use a cell phone, the ITU rules are at work. Even the internet relies on the work of this group.

It is like a giant rulebook for the whole planet. Just as you follow rules at school, countries follow ITU rules. This keeps the paths for our data clear and safe. It helps everyone join the global conversation through technology.
