Beyond policy debates, the ITU also handles specific legal and technical disputes. For example, in 2022, the United States eased restrictions on Starlink service in Iran. This was intended to help people bypass internet censorship. The Iranian government subsequently filed a complaint with the ITU to prohibit the service. In both October 2023 and March 2024, the ITU ruled in favor of Iran. This demonstrates how the ITU acts as a formal body for international telecommunications law. The agency remains central to how nations navigate the complex world of digital connectivity.
