An institute of technology is a specific type of tertiary education institution. These schools focus on engineering, technology, and applied sciences. They also teach natural sciences.

Some people call these institutions polytechnics or technical universities. They serve as specialized centers for learning how to apply scientific principles to real-world problems. These institutions play a vital role in preparing students for careers in industry and research.

These schools operate through different academic structures. Some focus on professional practice and teaching specific job skills. Others focus on deep research to discover new scientific knowledge.

In many countries, these institutions grant various academic degrees. Students can earn a bachelor's degree or a master's degree. Some advanced institutions are even authorized to award doctorates. This allows students to reach the highest levels of academic achievement in technical fields.

History shows that these institutions have existed for centuries. Many of the oldest ones were founded in the 1700s.

The Czech Technical University in Prague opened in 1707. Braunschweig University of Technology followed in 1745. Istanbul Technical University was established in 1773. The Budapest University of Technology and Economics began in 1782. Finally, the École Polytechnique in Paris was founded in 1794. These schools grew in popularity after World War II. This growth happened because industrialization created new needs for engineering and applied science education.

Different nations use different names and rules for these schools. In the United Kingdom, a "binary system" once existed. This system separated universities, which focused on research, from polytechnics, which focused on professional practice. In 1992, UK polytechnics were designated as universities. This meant they could award their own degrees. In Ireland, the Technological Universities Act of 2018 allowed institutes to transform into technological universities.

In Australia, many technical schools merged with existing universities during the 1990s.

In Austria, the distinction between types of schools is very clear. Some institutions are universities that focus on research and can award doctoral degrees. For example, TU Wien was founded in 1815 and has over 27,923 students. Graz University of Technology was founded in 1811 and has 13,454 students. Other institutions are research-only centers, like the Austrian Institute of Technology. There are also Fachhochschulen. These are German-style institutions that focus more on teaching and specific professions than on pure science. In 2010, there were 20 such institutions in Austria.

In Bangladesh, there are many specialized engineering schools. Some are public, like the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET). Others were formerly known as Institutes of Technology before being renamed. There are also several private engineering universities. Bangladesh also hosts the Islamic University of Technology, which is its only international engineering university. These schools provide the technical training necessary for the country's development.

Sometimes, the changing names of these schools causes debate. Some institutions change their names to "polytechnic university" or "university of applied sciences" for marketing. This is often an administrative change of statutes. Some experts worry that when technical schools convert too quickly to advanced universities, the quality of teaching might decline. This can lead to a shortage of specialized technical professionals in industry. It can also be linked to higher rates of graduate unemployment in some regions. This issue is most common where the state does not control the education system.

Ultimately, institutes of technology connect scientific theory to human progress. They bridge the gap between classroom learning and industrial application. By training engineers and scientists, they support the systems that run our modern world.
