Insects are amazing living things with very special bodies.

Scientists study how they are built through a field called morphology. Most insects are easy to spot because of three main body parts. These parts are the head, the thorax, and the abdomen. They also have three pairs of legs. Their mouthparts sit outside the head capsule. These features help separate them from their closest relatives.

An insect's body works like a well-planned machine. The head is for sensing the world and eating food. The thorax is the middle section used for moving around. It holds the legs and any wings the insect has.

The abdomen handles digestion, breathing, and making new babies. Because insects have no bones inside, they use an exoskeleton. This is a hard outer shell made mostly of chitin. This shell protects them and supports their whole body.

Building this shell is a very interesting process. The outer layer is called the epicuticle. It is thin and waxy to keep water inside. Under that is the procuticle, which is much thicker. The innermost part is the endocuticle. It is made of many layers of chitin and proteins. This part is tough and flexible like a sandwich. This structure gives the insect its strength and shape.

Since the hard shell cannot grow, insects must molt.

First, the old shell separates from the living skin. The insect releases a special fluid to help. This fluid digests parts of the old shell. This allows the insect to grow a new, larger one. This way of growing is called ecdysis. It is how a tiny larva becomes a bigger adult.

Insects come in many different shapes and sizes. Some are tiny, like the 0.3 mm fairyflies. Others are huge, like the 30 cm great owlet moth.

Their legs can be made for running, jumping, or digging. Many insects also have wings to fly through the air. This ability helps them live almost everywhere on Earth. They can live in nearly every place except the deep ocean.
