She was born in England in 1949. As a young girl, she lived in many different places. She spent time in Scotland and England. Her family also lived in New Delhi, India. In India, her mother helped people in a leper colony.

Ingrid helped her mother by feeding stray animals. This early work made her care about all living things. She learned that everyone in need deserves concern.

Newkirk moved to the United States when she was eighteen. She lived in Maryland and studied to be a stockbroker. One day, she found kittens that had been left behind.

This led her to work in an animal shelter. She saw that some animals were treated very badly. She worked hard to learn how to care for them. Later, she became an officer for animal protection in D.C. She helped start programs for pet adoption and health.

In March 1980, Newkirk started a group called PETA.

She co-founded it with a man named Alex Pacheco. At first, the group was just five people in a basement. They wanted to teach people about animal rights. This is the idea that animals should be treated fairly. They wanted to show that all species deserve respect.

In 1981, a big event made PETA famous.

Alex Pacheco went into a research lab in Silver Spring, Maryland. He took photos of 17 macaque monkeys. The photos showed that the monkeys were being treated poorly. This led to the first police raid on a lab in the U.S. It also helped change the Animal Welfare Act in 1985. This event turned PETA into a huge international group.

Today, PETA is the largest animal rights group in the world. Newkirk leads many campaigns to protect animals. She works to stop companies from testing cosmetics on them. She also uses undercover investigations to find animal cruelty.

Some people disagree with her ideas or her methods. They have criticized how PETA runs its animal shelters. Still, her work has changed how many people think about animals. She continues to fight for the rights of all living things.
