Efua Dorkenoo was a famous leader who fought for women's rights. She was born in Cape Coast, Ghana, in 1949. Many people called her "Mama Efua" because she was so kind. She spent over 30 years working to stop a harmful practice called female genital mutilation, or FGM. This practice can hurt women and girls very badly. Efua wanted to make sure governments around the world knew about this problem. She worked hard to turn it into a very important issue.

Efua's journey began when she moved to London at age 19. She wanted to study nursing to help people. She went to the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. Later, she earned a master's degree there. She also studied at City University London. While she was training to be a midwife, she saw the effects of FGM. This was when she decided to take action. She saw how the practice impacted the lives of women.

She began her big campaign by joining the Minority Rights Group. In 1980, she helped write one of the first reports on FGM. Then, in 1983, she started a group called FORWARD. This is a British group that helps women who have experienced FGM. She also worked with the World Health Organization starting in 1995. She served as their acting director for women's health until 2001. She even worked with an organization called Equality Now.

Efua wrote many important things to teach the world. In 1994, she wrote a book called "Cutting the Rose." A group of experts even called it one of Africa's 100 best books. She also worked with famous people like Alice Walker. Walker made a film called "Warrior Marks" in 1993 that featured Efua. Many people gave her awards for her courage. In 1994, she became an Officer of the Order of the British Empire.

Her life changed how people think about women's health. In 2013, the BBC named her one of their 100 Women. This is a very special honor. She lived a life full of hard work and big changes. Efua passed away in London in 2014 at the age of 65. She left behind a husband named Freddie Green and her sons. Her work still helps women and girls today.
