It began in the middle of the 20th century. Before this, the world focused on big factories and heavy industry. Now, our world centers on information technology. This means we use computers and digital tools to manage data. It is a period that changed how we live and work. This era helps us move information very quickly across the globe.

This change happened through a process called digitalization. In the past, technology was mostly analog. Analog means information was stored in physical ways, like vinyl records. Digital technology turns information into a special code. This code allows us to make perfect copies of things. We can also move this information between different devices easily.

During the 1980s, compact discs replaced cassette tapes for music. This made it much easier to listen to digital sounds. Digital signals can travel far without losing any important details.

Long before modern computers, people used many different tools. Ancient people used things like the abacus to count. In the 1600s, inventors made mechanical calculators and slide rules. During the 1800s, the Industrial Revolution brought mass-market calculators.

A man named Charles Babbage even designed a mechanical computer. However, his machine was never actually built in his lifetime. In the 1880s, Herman Hollerith used punch cards for business. These cards helped people organize large amounts of data. These early inventions paved the way for the digital world.

Many scientists helped build the modern computer. In 1947, John Bardeen and Walter Brattain invented the transistor.

This small part was very important for digital computers. In 1958, Jack Kilby achieved a milestone with the integrated circuit. Later, Robert Noyce made a tiny chip in 1959. By 1971, Intel released the 4004 microprocessor. This was the first computer processor on a single chip. This invention helped start the revolution of home computers.

Today, the Information Age connects almost everyone. In 1969, a message was sent over the ARPANET. This was one of the first steps toward the internet. Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web in 1989. This made the internet much easier for the public to use. In the 1980s, people started buying computers from Apple and Commodore.
