The Industrial Revolution was a massive global transition in manufacturing. It marked the shift from hand production methods to machine-based systems. This period succeeded the Second Agricultural Revolution. It created more widespread, efficient, and stable manufacturing processes. Historians consider this the most important event in human history. It is comparable only to the adoption of agriculture in terms of material advancement.

This transition relied on several key mechanical changes. The era saw the rise of the mechanized factory system. People moved from working in homes to working in large factories. New chemical manufacturing and iron production processes emerged. There was an increasing use of water power and steam power. The development of machine tools allowed for precision. These tools made the economical manufacture of metal parts possible.

Several factors enabled this rapid industrialization in Great Britain. High agricultural productivity from the British Agricultural Revolution freed up labor. It also ensured food surpluses for growing populations. Abundant natural resources like coal, iron, and water power were vital. An extensive network of ports, rivers, canals, and roads aided transport. Political stability and a legal system favoring property rights helped business. An entrepreneurial spirit and a consumer revolution also drove growth.

Britain began this process around 1760. By 1840, it had spread to continental Europe and the United States. The textile industry was the first to adopt modern methods. It became the dominant industry for employment and capital. In 1750, Britain imported 2.5 million pounds of raw cotton. By 1850, that number rose to 588 million pounds. The textile industry saw massive increases in value and output.

Technological breakthroughs drove these massive changes in productivity. In textiles, mechanized cotton spinning powered by steam increased output per worker by 500 times. The power loom increased output by a factor of 40. The cotton gin increased seed removal productivity by a factor of 50.

Steam engine efficiency also improved greatly. Engines began using only one-tenth to one-fifth as much fuel. The adaptation of stationary engines to rotary motion made them useful for factories.

Iron production changed through new chemical and mechanical processes. Substituting coke for charcoal lowered the fuel cost of pig iron. This allowed for the use of larger blast furnaces. The steam engine was used to power blast air in the 1750s. This overcame the old limitations of water power. The puddling process created structural grade iron at a lower cost. The rolling mill was fifteen times faster than manual hammering.

These changes had a profound impact on human society. Average income and population showed unprecedented sustained growth. The standard of living in the Western world began to increase consistently. This led to an era of per-capita economic growth in capitalist economies. The Industrial Revolution also set the stage for the Second Industrial Revolution. That later era introduced steel-making, assembly lines, and electrical grids.
